The Behavioral Masterclass

What a dog does is only the most visible part of a much larger story. This masterclass explores the needs, instincts, experiences, relationships, perceptions, and patterns beneath behavior—and how understanding those influences can change the way we respond to the dog in front of us.

We often begin with the behavior we want to change.

The barking. The lunging. The pulling. The destruction. The shutdown. The inability to settle, listen, or respond as expected.

But what a dog does is only the surface of what is happening.

Behavior is information—a form of communication and feedback shaped by the dog’s needs, instincts, genetics, physical well-being, past experiences, present environment, relationships, perception, and state of mind.

The Behavioral Masterclass invites us to look beyond the visible expression and become more curious about what may be creating, influencing, or sustaining it.

This class explores the many layers that contribute to behavior, including unmet needs, breed-specific characteristics, nutrition, trauma, the human end of the leash, and the way a dog experiences both themselves and the world around them. We examine the foundations of trust, respect, representation, association, and relevance—and the many ways dogs and humans communicate with and influence one another.

We also look at the difference between compliance and understanding. A dog may perform a behavior successfully in a controlled training environment without yet possessing the emotional capacity, contextual understanding, or real-world experience necessary to make that behavior functional elsewhere.

Lasting change asks us to consider more than whether a dog can obey a cue. It asks what the dog is practicing internally, what they are gaining from their choices, what the relationship is teaching them, and whether the work is creating genuine understanding or merely temporary performance.

Because if behavior is information, our task is not simply to silence it.

It's to learn how to read it—and respond to the individual dog standing in front of us.

Who this is for

his masterclass is for anyone who wants to understand dog behavior more deeply—whether navigating a specific behavioral concern or simply wanting to become more observant, thoughtful, and effective in their relationship with a dog.

It is especially valuable for people living or working with dogs whose behavior has been labeled difficult, stubborn, disobedient, reactive, anxious, unpredictable, or problematic—and for adopters, fosters, trainers, rescuers, and pet professionals who want to look beyond the label and understand the larger picture influencing what they see.

This is for the person ready to move beyond asking: “How do I make this behavior stop?” and begin asking: “What is this behavior telling me?”
